ELEVEN
Hannah hated the moment sheâd had to say goodbye to her mother. Brett and Caine had wheeled Momma out of the hospital in a wheelchair, and Hannah had stayed behind.
But just before they had wheeled her through the doors, she squeezed Hannahâs hand and said, âRemember, sweetheart, the name of the Lord is a strong tower.â
âIâll remember, Momma.â
No matter what came her way, Mommaâs faith in God remained strong. And that bolstered Hannah, too. The rest of the scripture came to mind that said the righteous run into the tower and are safe. Had God sent Ayden and his siblings to keep them safe? It would seem so.
Her mother was now well on her way to the prepared safe house and Ayden waited with Hannah for their transportation in the shadows in the hospital parking garage.
Exiting the hospital was safer for Momma if she went alone, separate from Hannah, whose presence might draw attention to her mother. Whoever had entered the house had probably thought it was empty, and if Hannah had been the target, she didnât think they realized her mother was living at the house. But she couldnât be sure about anything that was going on. She was just grateful her mother was alive. Momma said that the two intruders wore masks...so maybe they did know that someone was at home and hadnât wanted to be identified.
Her heart thrashed around at the thought of Momma in danger. So as much as she hadnât wanted to go to a safe house, she was beyond relieved that her mother would be protected, sheâd be safeâat least from dangerous men.
Though Hannah couldnât be sure about who had broken into the house, if it was the same men who were at the bank building tonightâcould they have been searching for something, believing the Hannah kept the item at the house? Sheâd bring that up to Ayden later.
Wheels squealed, echoing through the parking garage, letting them know their ride was on the way. An older-model SUV with dark windows slowed to a stop.
âThatâs for us.â Ayden pressed his hand at the small of her back and ushered her forward. He opened the door, and she climbed into the back seat and buckled in.
This was a bigger vehicle. Big enough to protect her while hiding her.
Itâs going to be okay. She had to believe that.
Ayden got in the back with her this time, while Everly drove. He seemed to know she wanted him next to her. Wanted him close. Protection emanated from him.
She peered out the window trusting that her mother would be okay and prayed this nightmare would end soon.
Sitting next to Ayden, she realized that the fear, the terror seemed to decrease, if only a little. But unfortunately, each moment she spent with him the truth about what happened before fought to come out.
She chewed on her bottom lip. Telling him the truth about nine years ago was the least of either of their concerns. Really. But she hated keeping secrets. Hated that he must think the absolute worst of herâthat she led him on and then broke it off with him.
